Carol Kirkwood Opens Up About Leaving BBC Breakfast After Nearly 30 Years: ‘It Became Torture’

After nearly three decades on our screens, Carol Kirkwood has bid farewell to BBC Breakfast, opening up candidly about the challenges that led to her departure. The 63-year-old weather presenter, who joined the show in 1998, officially left in April, marking the end of an era for viewers who grew up with her familiar, cheerful presence each morning.

Carol admits the hardest part of her role wasn’t the presenting itself, but the gruelling hours. “It’s not too bad in the summer, but the winter months are torture,” she told The Telegraph. For years, she set her alarm for 2:45am, leaving her with a “low-grade version of jet lag” that she says became impossible to ignore. On April 1, after presenting her final forecast, she dramatically threw her alarm clock in the bin – a symbolic gesture marking the end of decades of early mornings.

Despite the physical strain, Carol stresses that she has no regrets about her career. “I’m not a nurse on a cancer ward. I’m not a first responder who has to run into a fire. I’ve loved my job,” she explains. “But I love my husband more. Now I want us to be more than ships that pass in the night.” After years of balancing a demanding career and family life, she’s finally prioritising herself and her marriage.

Her farewell wasn’t without speculation. During her last broadcast, viewers noticed that colleague Naga Munchetty didn’t contribute a message to the pre-recorded tribute, sparking rumours of a “secret feud.” Fans quickly took to social media, commenting in disbelief at Naga’s absence. Yet, when Naga appeared in the studio alongside other colleagues, Carol thanked everyone warmly and even teased Naga with a playful: “And even you, Nags!” prompting laughter and showing that any tension might just have been playful banter.

She leaves behind a legacy of professionalism, warmth, and charm that viewers will long remember, and a reminder that sometimes stepping away is necessary for personal happiness and balance.
