BBC Radio 2’s Bob Harris Shares Heart-Wrenching Cancer Update as It Spreads to His Spine

BBC Radio 2’s beloved “Whispering Bob” Harris has shared a heartfelt and sobering update with his fans, revealing that his prostate cancer, which he’s been battling since 2007, has now spread to his upper spine. The 80-year-old radio legend, who was recently hospitalised due to severe back pain, took to social media to share the “frightening” news with his followers.

In a post on Instagram, Bob explained that after multiple scans, doctors discovered that his cancer had spread, prompting him to begin an intense two-week course of radiotherapy. “Several scans later, we discovered that my prostate cancer has got into my upper spine… really frightening news,” Bob wrote. “So, I immediately began a course of radiotherapy to bring things back under control.”

Despite the setback, Bob remains optimistic, sharing that he’s back home and on the path to recovery. “Thankfully I’m back at home now, on the pathway to recovery and feeling stronger every day,” he said. “I have started a programme of rehab and today I got out into this glorious weather for the first time with my son.”

Bob expressed his deep gratitude to his family, friends, and the BBC Radio 2 team, acknowledging the immense support he’s received. “My family has been here for me in a massive way,” he said. “I love them so much. Helen Thomas and the @bbcradio2 family have also been supportive beyond words.”

Bob also shared his plans to return to the airwaves in the coming weeks, setting a personal goal to return by mid-May for his Country show and late May for Sounds of the 70’s. He thanked his replacements during his time away, expressing excitement about getting back to his listeners: “I know that my friends @dariusrucker and @shaunkeaveny_ have been doing a fabulous job… but I absolutely cannot wait to be back.”

Bob’s post has been met with an outpouring of love and support from fans, colleagues, and friends, including Gary Kemp from Spandau Ballet, who wished him a speedy recovery.

Bob’s journey to recovery continues to inspire, and his fans eagerly await his return to the BBC Radio 2 airwaves.
