Alabama Student Jimmy Gracey Tragically Drowns in Barcelona After Disappearing from Nightclub

The tragic death of 20-year-old Alabama student Jimmy Gracey has left his family and friends devastated. Jimmy, who was spending spring break in Barcelona visiting friends studying abroad, was found dead after disappearing from a nightclub in the early hours of Wednesday, March 19, 2026.

CCTV footage has revealed the heartbreaking final moments of Jimmy’s life. After leaving the popular Shôko nightclub alone around 3 a.m., Jimmy walked towards the nearby rocks along Somorrostro Beach and tragically fell into the sea. His body was discovered by police divers nearly 24 hours later, in about 12 feet of water near Port Olympic.

The Search and Discovery

Initially, there were concerns that foul play may have been involved after Jimmy was seen leaving the nightclub with an unidentified stranger. However, investigators later confirmed that his death was an accidental drowning. Security footage revealed that Jimmy walked alone towards the rocks and fell into the water, and the discovery of his body along the breakwater confirmed the accident.

“We are grateful for the outpouring of love, support, and prayers from people around the world,” his family said in a statement. They expressed the immense pain they are struggling with, as well as their appreciation for the efforts made to share Jimmy’s story and bring his life to light.

A Life Cut Short

Exactly what happened to Gracey after he was separated from his friends at the club is still unknown and investigators are still piecing together his movements

Jimmy, a junior at the University of Alabama and a member of the Theta Chi fraternity, was well-loved by those who knew him. His fraternity brother, Cavin McLay, said he was initially unaware that Jimmy had gone missing, but when he learned of the situation, his heart sank. “It’s definitely not a good text to wake up to,” McLay shared. “My first thoughts were, hopefully, he just lost his phone and tried making his way back on his own.”

Unfortunately, that was not the case. Jimmy’s disappearance sparked an intense search, with friends and family members distributing flyers on the beach and tirelessly asking anyone if they had seen him. Divers and drones were deployed to search the area, but it was only when they found his wallet floating in the water that the search became more focused.

The Impact on Family and Friends

Jimmy’s mother, Therese Gracey, described the unimaginable pain of losing her son, but also expressed gratitude that law enforcement was able to find his phone and begin piecing together his movements. She added that Jimmy was an active and positive presence in his fraternity, where he was recently elected as chaplain, and that his loss was felt deeply by all who knew him.

“He was the best, the greatest son,” said his brother Mike Norris. “We were so lucky to have him.” The University of Alabama also confirmed Jimmy’s enrollment and offered support to his family during this tragic time.

Final Moments and Legacy

Jimmy’s final moments were marked by his desire to enjoy life and his close-knit group of friends. As his family and friends continue to grieve, they are focused on keeping his memory alive, hoping others will remember the joyful and loving young man that Jimmy was.

Our thoughts are with Jimmy’s family during this incredibly difficult time, and we hope his story brings awareness to the unexpected dangers of the world’s coastal areas. May his legacy be remembered by those who loved him.
