Denise Welch, the popular Loose Women star, has marked a remarkable milestone in her life, celebrating 14 years of sobriety after battling alcohol addiction. The 63-year-old actress and television personality opened up about her struggles with alcohol, revealing that her drinking had led to blackouts, arguments, and turmoil in her personal life.
A Journey from Darkness to Light
In a heartfelt post shared on Instagram, Denise reflected on her journey to sobriety, expressing her gratitude for the support of her husband, Lincoln Townley, who also reached a significant milestone of 14 years of sobriety in February. Denise’s words were both candid and inspiring as she acknowledged the impact alcohol had on her mental and physical health.
“Today I celebrate 14 years since I had my last alcoholic drink,” Denise wrote, alongside a photo from her past and one from the present. “Not even a sherry trifle… although I did have a rum and raisin ice cream in Italy last year but luckily remained sober!!!” Her light-hearted tone captured her journey from dark times to a newfound clarity.
She continued, praising her husband for playing a key role in her transformation: “I cannot imagine what my life would be like had I not met @lincolntownley who was 14 years sober in February. The only thing that we can ever thank alcohol for is that we wouldn’t have met in a nightclub at 6am had we not been drinkers. We knew that we potentially had a great relationship but the problems, the blackouts, the terrible decisions, the arguments and fights only happened when drink and drugs were involved.”
Facing the Reality of Addiction
Denise candidly spoke about the devastating consequences her addiction had on her life, sharing that she was trying to cope with a severe mental illness by using alcohol as a form of self-medication. “I was desperately, pathetically trying to medicate a severe mental illness to no avail,” she explained.
For Lincoln, the decision to turn to sobriety was equally personal. He was working in the nightclub industry, which required him to be active in the early hours of the morning. Despite their struggles, Denise emphasized how the couple supported one another through their darkest days, calling it a “difficult journey” that they managed to navigate together.
“We were lucky that we could be each other’s anchor and go on this difficult journey together,” she said. While the couple never attended Alcoholics Anonymous (AA), Denise stated that she did find wisdom in the program. She recalled a statement from an AA meeting that resonated deeply with her: “You have a problem with alcohol when your drinking is making you and the people who love you desperately unhappy.”
Denise’s battle with alcohol led to moments of deep reflection, where she realized that the pain was caused by her inability to control her addiction, and how it affected those closest to her. The emotional toll on her family was immense, but Denise and Lincoln’s determination to overcome their addiction ultimately brought them closer.
Moving Forward with Gratitude
Today, Denise is a strong advocate for sobriety, looking back with a sense of relief and gratitude. “We miss absolutely nothing about our old drinking days,” she said. “But we are now at a place where we can reminisce and find humour in some of our stories rather than just shame. Believe me, guilt is something we all live with, shame is something else and takes a lot of work and family support and forgiveness to come to terms with.”
For Denise, her sobriety represents much more than a personal triumph; it signifies a chance to live a life free from the chaos that alcohol once brought. Her journey has not only been about overcoming addiction, but also about rebuilding her relationship with her children and helping them live without the burden of worry that her drinking days once brought.
Her emotional post concluded with a note of love and appreciation for her family: “We have a wonderful marriage and because of that, our children can live their lives free of the worry and embarrassment that our continued lifestyle would have brought.”
A Message of Hope
Denise’s milestone is a testament to the power of resilience and the importance of support from loved ones. While her path to sobriety was undoubtedly difficult, it is a story of hope that resonates with anyone who has faced addiction. Through her transparency and willingness to share her experiences, Denise continues to inspire countless others who may be struggling with similar issues.
Her message is clear: sobriety isn’t just about giving up alcohol; it’s about finding strength, rebuilding relationships, and embracing a new way of living. For Denise, the journey continues, but she remains grateful for the life she now leads—one that is sober, fulfilling, and full of love.
Denise’s story is not just a reflection of her own recovery but also a reminder that with willpower, support, and time, it is possible to turn one’s life around—even after the darkest of days.
