Comedian and TV presenter Rhod Gilbert has shocked fans with a powerful admission about how his life has changed after being diagnosed with stage 4 head and neck cancer. In a candid new interview, Rhod opens up about what it’s like to live with his “new normal” after fighting one of the most harrowing battles of his life.
In June 2022, the 57-year-old comedian’s world was turned upside down when he received the devastating diagnosis. What followed was a grueling journey of chemotherapy and radiotherapy at the renowned Velindre Cancer Centre in Cardiff. But despite the heart-wrenching struggle, Rhod found a glimmer of hope in October 2023 when he received his first clear scan—a moment he describes as “life-changing.”
“Life is sweet now,” Rhod shared in an exclusive interview with BBC Wales. “I feel wonderful, but it’s not the same. Things are never quite the same again.” The comedian, known for his sharp wit and unshakable positivity, revealed the emotional toll cancer has taken on him, saying he now sees life with a renewed sense of importance. “I feel everything a bit more keenly,” he confessed. “Waking up every morning is an exciting experience. I’ve never felt more alive.”

But Rhod’s journey hasn’t been without its dark side. As anyone who has faced cancer will tell you, the battle extends far beyond the hospital beds. The effects of head and neck cancer have left their mark on the comedian’s body in ways he never imagined. “With head and neck cancer, everything tastes disgusting. Even water, even a cup of tea—everything is awful,” Rhod recalled. “It was so bad at the time that I had to be fed through a machine. It was too painful to swallow.”
Though Rhod has made significant progress since his treatment, he still grapples with lingering issues. His taste has returned to around 80%, but some things still taste strange. “My swallowing is pretty good now, but at the time, it was impossible,” he said. “Food was horrible. It felt like I was just getting through each day with no real joy.”

Despite these challenges, Rhod has found a strength he never knew he had. His battle with cancer has changed him, but in many ways, it has made him a better person. He has become more present, more grateful for the small moments in life that most of us take for granted.
Rhod’s journey is a reminder that even in our darkest moments, there is light. “Life is never the same after something like this,” he said, but for him, the fight has brought new clarity, new joy, and a new love for the life he has. His message is one of hope, resilience, and the unbreakable human spirit.
As Rhod continues to heal, his story has become a symbol of strength for those facing their own battles. And while the road ahead may still be uncertain, one thing is for sure—Rhod Gilbert is living proof that life can still be sweet, even after cancer.
