Labour Faces Historic Blowout in Wales as Keir Starmer Braces for Unprecedented Loss
Labour is on the brink of losing its grip on Wales as the party gears up for a monumental defeat in the upcoming Senedd elections. The upcoming May 7 vote threatens to see Labour lose power for the first time since the Welsh Parliament’s formation in 1999, with Plaid Cymru projected to emerge as the dominant party.

According to a new poll, Plaid Cymru is set to secure 33 seats in the Senedd, marking a decisive victory. Labour, once the powerhouse in Wales, is forecast to drop to third place with a mere 17 seats, behind Reform UK, who are expected to claim second with 29 seats. This potential loss would deal a historic blow to Labour’s decades-long control over Welsh politics.

This marks the first time Labour would be ousted from power in Wales, an unprecedented shift in the nation’s political landscape. Christopher Hope of GB News has raised alarms, calling this “a real risk of losing Wales for the first time in a century.”
The results reflect broader trends across the UK, with Labour poised to suffer its worst-ever results in local council elections in England, also taking place on May 7. With Labour controlling or leading coalitions in 83 of the 139 English local authorities, it is now projected to secure just 42, a dramatic fall from grace. The Greens, although gaining momentum, are expected to only win three seats in Wales and see limited success in England.
In contrast, Reform UK is projected for an extraordinary breakthrough, with some forecasts suggesting the party could take control of 69 councils across England. This surge is especially evident in the Red Wall, where Reform is making considerable inroads.
The shifting political landscape highlights how quickly Labour’s once-secure footholds are eroding, especially in key urban areas like Leeds, Manchester, and Sheffield, where Reform’s influence is on the rise. Even in long-standing Labour strongholds like Sunderland and Barnsley, Reform is poised to claim victory, marking a stunning reversal of fortunes.
Keir Starmer faces an uncertain future, with his party’s once-stable dominance being severely challenged by a resurgent Reform and a shifting political tide across both Wales and England. As local elections loom, the political map of the UK is set for a dramatic re-drawing.
