Opera legend Alfie Boe has revealed the heart-wrenching details of his painful divorce from ex-wife Sarah, admitting it’s a “shame” he couldn’t speak the truth about the situation that sent him spiraling into a “dark place.”
The 52-year-old tenor, known for his role in Les Misérables, split from his wife of 16 years in 2020, after which she moved with their children to the United States, leaving Alfie behind in the UK. While he’s remained tight-lipped about the full details of the split, Boe told iNews that the public didn’t understand why his kids had to leave him, calling it a difficult chapter in his life.
“It’s a shame when you can’t tell the truth, and you take the higher ground,” Boe confessed. “It’s been a very hard time after my divorce and I wanted to do what I felt was right for them. They missed America and their old friends. I had to take the bigger path.”
A “Really Dark Place”
The heartache didn’t stop there for the renowned singer. In 2022, Alfie made an emotional confession, revealing that after his split, he fell into such despair that he took an overdose. The overwhelming pain of losing his family sent him into a “dark place,” and he sought help, spending five weeks in a rehabilitation facility.
“It was a scary time,” Boe recalled, speaking on the BBC show Freeze the Fear with Wim Hof. “When my separation happened, I went into a really dark place. I’d gone through beating myself up, hating myself, and not having any love for myself. It resulted in a foolish act of throwing some pills down my throat because I’d lost my way.”
Boe’s fans were shocked when they learned of the overdose, but he now credits his rehab experience for helping him find a way out of the darkness. “I ended up in rehab for about five weeks and it was the hardest time of my life,” he said.
The Separation
Boe and Sarah had been living in the Cotswolds with their two children, Grace, 17, and Alfie, 13, since 2018, but the strain of the pandemic lockdowns in 2020 forced the couple to confront their troubled marriage. They separated shortly after, with Sarah returning to the US to live with the children, a decision Alfie fully supported, even though it was deeply painful.
At the time of the split, Boe issued a statement confirming the end of their marriage, saying, “I have nothing but love and respect for Sarah, who’s been an incredible partner and an amazing mother to our two beautiful children. Everything is very amicable.”
A New Romance with Elizabeth Worth
While the divorce remains a painful memory, Alfie has recently moved on, confirming a romance with 29-year-old Elizabeth Worth in 2025. The couple was spotted enjoying a cozy dinner together at the Savoy Hotel in London. Boe’s new relationship marks the first since his brief fling with Ted Lasso star Hannah Waddingham in 2022. The romance was kept low-key due to Waddingham’s rising fame, and the two managed to enjoy secret dates during Eurovision.
“Hannah was keen to let her work do the talking,” a source revealed. “They kept things quiet, even managing to sneak Alfie in backstage during the Eurovision madness.”
Family Life and Regaining Balance
While his romantic life is starting anew, Boe’s main focus remains on his family. His children continue to live in America, and although the separation remains difficult, Boe remains optimistic about the future. The artist is committed to putting his family first, even if it means remaining in the shadows of his own personal pain.
The news of Alfie Boe’s private battles and new relationship has stunned fans, but he’s determined to keep moving forward. “I’m 52 now, and while things have been hard, I feel like I’m in a better place. It’s time to move on, but I’ll always love my children and support them,” he said.
