John Nolan, the versatile actor who graced iconic films like Batman Begins and Dunkirk, has passed away at the age of 87. Nolan, who was also the beloved uncle of legendary director Christopher Nolan, was remembered by his wife, Kim Hartman, as âa free spiritâ with âan anarchic witâ and âthe kindest personâ she ever knew.
Born on May 22, 1938, Nolanâs career spanned decades, with memorable roles including the villainous John Greer in the CBS sci-fi drama Person of Interest, which was created by his nephews, Jonathan and Christopher. His acting career also saw him portraying Douglas Fredericks in Batman Begins and The Dark Knight Rises, as well as a poignant role as a blind war vet in Dunkirk.
Nolan was not just a talented actor; he was also an educator, serving as a director and lecturer at Stratford College, sharing his love for theatre and film with students. His widow described him as someone who was âarticulate, intelligent, and devoted to his family.â
Known for his strong family bonds, Nolanâs death has left a void in the Nolan family. He is survived by his wife, children, grandchildren, and, of course, his nephews, Christopher and Jonathan. His final performance came at the age of 85 in the HBO series Dune: Prophecy, where he played the Speaker of The Hall.
