Gyles Brandreth Opens Up About Grandson Kitt’s Brave Fight Against Childhood Cancer
In a deeply personal and emotional revelation, broadcaster and writer Gyles Brandreth has spoken about the terrifying moment his family learned that his baby grandson was battling cancer — and the extraordinary journey that followed.
The beloved television personality, known to millions from This Morning, shared the story of his grandson Kitt ahead of World Cancer Day, offering a moving glimpse into a family’s fight against one of the most frightening diagnoses imaginable.

A Discovery That Changed Everything
The ordeal began in 2017 when Brandreth’s daughter Saethryd and her husband Mark noticed something unusual on their baby son’s stomach — a small lump no bigger than a pea.
At first, doctors believed it could be something minor, possibly a cyst or a hernia. But further tests revealed a far more serious reality.

Kitt had Rhabdomyosarcoma, a rare and aggressive cancer affecting fewer than 60 children each year in the UK.
He was just 15 months old.
“We tend to think of cancer as something that happens to unlucky middle-aged people,” Brandreth later reflected.
“We never imagined it could strike a child — especially our Kitt.”
A Gruelling Medical Battle
Kitt began treatment at Great Ormond Street Hospital, one of the world’s leading centres for paediatric care.
The tiny toddler endured months of intensive chemotherapy, treatment that pushed his small body to its limits. Along the way he suffered severe complications, including a dangerous bacterial infection that affected his heart and liver.
For Brandreth and his family, the experience was overwhelming.
“It was a shock to the system,” he admitted.
“You never think something like this could happen to a child you love so much.”
Despite the fear and uncertainty, the family found comfort in the dedication of the medical team caring for Kitt.
“The doctors and nurses at Great Ormond Street were extraordinary,” Brandreth said.
“They never once made us feel alone.”

Finding Light in Dark Moments
While Kitt’s parents focused on the difficult medical decisions surrounding his care, Brandreth took on a different role — helping keep his grandson’s world filled with childhood joy.
He spent hours with the young boy in the hospital playroom solving jigsaw puzzles, building toys and sharing silly poems.
“What’s wonderful about Great Ormond Street is that they never forget children are still children,” he said.
“Kitt and I would laugh together — and those moments meant everything.”
A Remarkable Recovery
The journey was far from straightforward.
At one stage Kitt developed veno-occlusive disease, a potentially life-threatening condition triggered by chemotherapy.
Yet through a combination of expert medical care and remarkable resilience, the young boy eventually overcame the illness.
In November 2017, Kitt was declared cancer-free.
A Story of Hope
Today, nearly a decade later, Kitt is a lively and energetic 10-year-old who continues to visit Great Ormond Street Hospital for annual check-ups.
For Brandreth, each passing year is a reminder of how close the family came to tragedy — and how fortunate they feel today.
“Every year that goes by reminds us how lucky we are,” he said.
“Kitt is thriving, and we will always be grateful to the people who saved his life.”
The story stands as a powerful testament to the resilience of children, the devotion of families, and the life-saving work carried out by hospitals like Great Ormond Street.
