The Metropolitan Police have detained over 500 individuals following a demonstration in Trafalgar Square on Saturday, staged in support of the banned group Palestine Action. Protesters, aged between 18 and 87, gathered in large numbers, some seated on the ground while holding placards bearing messages such as “I oppose genocide. I support Palestine Action.” The protest, which included large banners near the National Gallery, prompted the police to revise their arrest figures from an initial 200 to more than 500.

Among those arrested was Robert Del Naja, a member of the band Massive Attack, who voiced concerns about the potential consequences for his career due to his involvement. Del Naja, who was removed from the protest by officers, defended Palestine Action’s actions as “patriotic” for attempting to prevent the UK’s involvement in alleged war crimes.

The demonstration has sparked a wider debate regarding the limits of free expression and protest in the UK, especially with regard to supporting a group classified as a terror organization by the government.
