This Could Be My Last Update…’ – Paula Hudgell Shares Heartbreaking Message After Life-Saving Surgery Amid Stage-Four Cancer Battle

In a heart-wrenching hospital update, Paula Hudgell, the devoted adoptive mother of double-amputee hero Tony Hudgell, has shared a deeply emotional message after undergoing one of the most challenging surgeries of her life. Describing the procedure as “brutal,” Paula opened up about her fight with stage-four cancer, revealing the emotional and physical toll it has taken on her.

Tony Hudgell's trailblazing first steps - Evelina London Children's CharityAt 58 years old, Paula has been battling bowel cancer, which spread to the peritoneal lining. Recently, she underwent life-saving Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy (HIPEC) and Cytoreductive Surgery (CRS), as well as a hernia repair. However, the road to recovery has been anything but easy. In a candid social media post, Paula admitted that the first week after surgery was overwhelming—filled with excruciating pain, extreme exhaustion, and constant fear. There were moments when she questioned whether she could pull through.

But Paula’s strength and determination have always been her driving forces. Having become an outspoken advocate for child cruelty sentencing after adopting Tony, she has faced many hardships throughout her life. Yet, she always finds the will to push forward. Despite the agony, Paula forced herself to stand and walk again, finding solace in those small, painful steps as they became her lifeline in the darkest moments.

“I won’t sugar-coat it,” Paula shared on Instagram, alongside a touching photo of herself in a black headscarf with Tony by her side. “This is the hardest thing I’ve ever done, but it’s also the thing that’s allowed me to go home after 12 days and be with my family again.”

Earlier that day, test results showed that only a single nodule remained, with no signs of cancer in the organs and areas that were removed. Tears of relief filled her eyes as she called it “the best news we could have hoped for.”

However, the battle is far from over. Paula and her family are preparing for the next hurdle: the discovery of lung nodules. A CT scan has been scheduled, and Paula is anxiously awaiting her follow-up appointment with her oncologist. “If surgery isn’t an option, it’ll be back to chemotherapy,” she said, adding, “Either way, we keep going.”

Paula’s cancer journey began in February 2022, when she was first diagnosed with bowel cancer after years of being misdiagnosed with IBS and menopause symptoms. By the time the tumor was detected, it had already spread through the bowel wall. Although she received the good news of being cancer-free after surgery and chemotherapy, the cancer made a shocking return, spreading to her lungs and abdominal lining, eventually being classified as stage-four cancer.

In July of last year, Paula admitted that the diagnosis was devastating, but she vowed to fight her hardest battle. She has kept that promise with unmatched tenacity.

Beyond her personal battle, Paula has become a beacon of hope for others, particularly in her advocacy work. Her relentless campaigning led to the passing of “Tony’s Law,” a landmark piece of legislation that increased prison sentences for those responsible for causing serious harm or death to children. For her tireless efforts, she was awarded an OBE in 2022, and she continues to be a tireless champion for children’s rights.

Paula also expressed immense gratitude for the medical team who treated her, acknowledging their care and compassion for giving her the precious gift of more time with her loved ones. The outpouring of support from friends, celebrities, and fans has been overwhelming, including touching messages from TV presenter Zoe Ball and fashion designer Karen Millen, who offered their prayers.

Despite the overwhelming support, Paula’s most heartbreaking realization has been how her illness has affected Tony. The young hero, who suffered life-changing injuries at the hands of his birth parents, has flourished under Paula’s care. Yet, he is now deeply worried about his mother. Paula revealed that Tony has been telling his teacher, “I’m worried about Mummy.” To protect him, Paula has kept the full extent of her illness a secret from him, not wanting to break his innocent belief that everyone survives. She hopes to protect that belief for as long as possible.
