Keir Starmer Prepares for Cabinet Reshuffle Following May Local Elections
Labour’s Keir Starmer is preparing for a significant reshuffle of his Cabinet following the local elections in May, as party sources reveal plans to adjust his leadership team in response to anticipated economic challenges. Insiders within the Labour Party suggest that Starmer will use the reshuffle as a strategy to address the potential fallout from underwhelming economic results expected in the coming months.

Among the ministers reportedly facing potential demotion are Peter Kyle, the Secretary of State for Business and Trade, and Liz Kendall, the Secretary of State for Science, Innovation, and Technology. Both figures, aligned with the Blairite faction of the party, are said to have little individual power within the current leadership structure, making them vulnerable to a reshuffle. Sources indicate that they could “depart quietly” if they are dropped from their positions.

In contrast, Lucy Powell, the deputy leader of the Labour Party, is expected to be considered for a more prominent Cabinet role. Angela Rayner, who has faced recent issues related to taxes, is also reportedly being considered for a return to the Cabinet, though sources close to Rayner suggest she is in no rush to rejoin the team.

Further complications have arisen surrounding Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper, with reports from Washington suggesting that Cooper has struggled to establish strong connections with U.S. officials, including Marco Rubio, with one source noting that Rubio had delayed a call with her.

As Starmer prepares for these changes, the reshuffle will be a crucial step in navigating the political and economic challenges ahead, as the Labour Party aims to maintain its position in the lead-up to the upcoming elections.
