Keir Starmer Calls for Closer EU Ties Amid Iran War Crisis, Rejects Trump’s NATO Threat
Keir Starmer, the UK Prime Minister, has called for closer ties with the European Union in response to the escalating crisis in Iran, dismissing former US President Donald Trump’s threats to withdraw from NATO. Starmer stressed that Britain’s long-term national interest requires deeper cooperation with Europe to address the ongoing geopolitical instability.

Starmer’s comments came after Trump criticized NATO as a “paper tiger,” suggesting that US withdrawal from the alliance might soon be inevitable. Responding firmly, Starmer said: “First, NATO remains the most effective military alliance the world has ever seen. It has protected us for decades, and we are fully committed to NATO. Secondly, regardless of the pressure from others or the discussions taking place, I will act in the best interests of Britain in every decision I make.”

He added, “It is increasingly clear that as the world continues along this volatile path, our long-term national interest requires closer ties with our European allies.” Despite the mounting pressure, Starmer affirmed Labour’s commitment to not rejoining the single market or customs union. However, he emphasized the need for a more ambitious economic, security, and defense partnership with Europe, aimed at fostering mutual values and addressing shared challenges in a dangerous world.
A summit with EU leaders will take place in the coming weeks to formalize existing commitments, Starmer confirmed.

While Starmer’s approach on strengthening ties with the EU is seen as crucial during this uncertain time, critics have accused him of using the Iran war as a pretext to push for deeper EU integration. With soaring fuel prices and economic strain from the conflict, Starmer is facing mounting pressure to alleviate the impact on British households.
As the crisis unfolds, the UK government has been working to mitigate the effects of rising fuel costs, with diesel now nearing £2 per litre, further straining the cost of living.
