Mel Schilling, the well-known Married At First Sight star, has touched the hearts of millions with her insightful dating advice and warm, empathetic nature. Before she became a renowned relationship expert, however, Mel had her own struggles in the realm of love—spending much of her 30s single and unsure of her future partner. Her journey to finding her “soulmate,” Gareth Brisbane, was one of self-discovery, reflection, and ultimately, a deep connection that changed her life.
Mel’s career as a dating expert began after she spent many years focusing on building her professional life, including traveling the world and working overseas. She described her 30s as a period of singlehood by choice, where her priorities were on personal growth and business success. “I was single for my entire thirties. I wasn’t interested in anyone. I was busy traveling the world, working overseas, and living a great life,” Mel explained in past interviews. This phase of her life was one where she didn’t actively seek a relationship, and instead, she dedicated herself to her career.
However, things began to shift as Mel entered her late 30s. At nearly 40, Mel met Gareth through eHarmony, marking a significant turning point in her love life. “We were both nearly 40 when we met, and he just turned my world upside down. I was not expecting that!” Mel recalled. Despite the geographical distance—Gareth was living in Adelaide while Mel was in Melbourne—their connection blossomed quickly. They spent six weeks communicating daily before they finally met, which Mel believes helped lay the foundation for a successful relationship.
Their bond deepened quickly, and soon they began discussing the idea of having children. Unfortunately, Mel experienced a heartbreaking miscarriage at 12 weeks of pregnancy, an experience she described as incredibly tough. But the couple’s commitment to each other and their dream of becoming parents remained strong. They decided to try IVF, and at 42, Mel gave birth to their daughter, Maddie, whom they lovingly describe as their greatest adventure.
In 2018, the couple celebrated their commitment to one another with a special ceremony in Bali, which Mel described as feeling “more like a wedding.” Two years later, they officially married in Melbourne, with their daughter Maddie by their side. The day was deeply emotional for Mel, as she reflected on her journey to this moment. “I had a bit of a cry on the day. It’s just the meaning of it all. I was a late bloomer in life,” she shared. “I didn’t meet my husband until I was nearly 40, and then we had our daughter when I was nearly 42, so to finally say our ‘I dos’ was very special.”
Before Gareth, Mel had many dating experiences, and she has spoken candidly about the mistakes she made in her past relationships. She joked about her younger dating years, admitting that she had built “walls of self-protection” and was sometimes harsh with potential partners. “I was casually dating, but only half-heartedly. I dated the Man Child, the Commitmentphobe, the Class Clown,” she said, referring to the common dating archetypes she encountered. After reflecting on her past, she realized she needed to be more authentic when it came to relationships, and that’s when she started attracting a “different calibre of man.”
That man was Gareth, who Mel described as her equal. She cherished the deep connection they shared and how she could be vulnerable with him in ways she had never experienced before. “He just clicked,” she said. “He’s my equal, and I can be completely vulnerable with him.”
Their love story was one of profound connection, and despite the challenges they faced—including Mel’s cancer diagnosis and her ongoing health struggles—they remained dedicated to each other and their family. After Mel was diagnosed with colon cancer in 2023, she underwent surgery and chemotherapy while continuing her work with MAFS. Sadly, in 2024, she discovered the cancer had spread to her lungs and later to her brain, and she continued to face the illness with grace and determination.
Mel’s final moments were a testament to her strength, with her husband Gareth sharing an emotional tribute after her passing. “In her final moments, when I thought cancer had taken away her ability to speak, she ushered me closer and whispered a message for Maddie and me that will sustain me for the rest of my life,” he wrote. “This is a woman who became a new mum and a TV star at 42—and nailed both. She never complained and always showed courage, grace, compassion, and empathy.”
Mel’s love story with Gareth, their journey through parenthood, and her brave battle with cancer have left an indelible mark on all who knew her. Her passing on March 24, 2026, at the age of 54, has brought an outpouring of tributes from colleagues, friends, and fans alike. She was not only an advocate for healthy relationships but also a symbol of resilience, kindness, and love.
As Mel’s family and friends mourn her loss, they continue to remember her not just for her work on MAFS, but for the love and light she brought to everyone she encountered. Gareth’s final words about Mel—”Goodbye, my love. My one. Until we meet again”—are a poignant reminder of the deep connection they shared, and her legacy will live on in the hearts of those who loved her.
