Greg James, the Radio 1 Breakfast DJ, has raised an extraordinary £4 million for Comic Relief after completing an intense 1000km tandem bike challenge. The final figure was revealed during the live broadcast of the charity telethon on Friday, with Greg expressing both surprise and gratitude for the support he received.
A Herculean Effort for a Great Cause
Greg cycled for eight days, pushing his limits and often surprising fans with unexpected moments, including a visit from Prince William. The challenge began with Greg cycling through the Scottish borders, and as the days passed, his fundraising efforts snowballed. Coldplay contributed a generous donation of £100,000, further boosting the final tally.
Speaking about the journey, Greg admitted that the fundraising effort had become bigger than he ever anticipated. “It sort of just snowballed,” he said. “Coldplay donated a hundred grand, and seeing the faces of people at the top of a hill when you don’t have anything left in your legs… it’s amazing.”

As the final total was announced—£4,225,939—Greg expressed his discomfort with the overwhelming praise he received, saying, “I’ve had too much praise for this now. It was a daft idea to raise money, but thank you to everyone who has supported the cause.”
The money raised by Greg’s bike challenge will go towards causes supported by Comic Relief, including efforts to tackle homelessness, poverty, and mental health issues across the UK and beyond.
