Titanic Named the Weepiest Movie of All Time, Beating The Notebook and Ghost
Film fans have spoken, and the ultimate tear-jerker of all time has been crowned — and it’s not The Notebook or Ghost, as many might have guessed. The 1997 epic Titanic, starring Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio, has emerged as the movie most likely to make audiences cry.
In a survey conducted by Freeview channel Great Romance, movie enthusiasts were asked to pick the films that brought them to tears, and Titanic topped the list, surpassing legendary classics like Casablanca and Gone With The Wind. A staggering 41% of moviegoers admitted that Titanic made them shed a tear, cementing its place in cinematic history for its heart-wrenching love story and tragic ending.
What Makes Titanic So Emotional?
The film tells the tragic love story of Rose DeWitt Bukater, a wealthy aristocrat, and Jack Dawson, an artist who meet aboard the ill-fated RMS Titanic. As elderly Rose recounts the horrific events of that fateful night, audiences are still left in tears, decades after its release. Iconic moments, such as Jack’s final sacrifice, continue to resonate deeply with viewers worldwide.
Coming in second was The Notebook (2004), starring Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams, which earned 20% of votes as a tear-jerker. This emotionally charged love story spanning decades touches hearts, particularly among women, with 26% of women admitting they cried, compared to 15% of men.
Other Notable Tear-Jerkers
While classics like Gone With The Wind and Casablanca scored relatively low in the survey, the movie Ghost (1990), starring Patrick Swayze and Demi Moore, also made it to the list, proving it remains a tear-jerker for many. Other movies that made the top 10 include Love Actually, Pretty Woman, Notting Hill, and Dirty Dancing.
Interestingly, the survey also revealed that women are twice as likely to cry at movies than men. According to Kate Gartland, marketing director at Great Romance, “A great love story lasts a lifetime, and it’s no surprise that Titanic claims the top spot, as movie fans clearly love classic storytelling.”
Why Do We Cry at Movies?
Crying while watching a sad movie can have physical and emotional benefits. According to UK-based eye specialist Tina Patel, “Crying helps us process emotions and releases endorphins and oxytocin — the ‘love hormone’ — which can elevate our mood and create a sense of connection with others.”
Research also supports that crying can strengthen social bonds, particularly when shared with others. A study found that watching sad movies with a loved one enhances feelings of emotional support and connection, making the experience even more meaningful.
