Kelly Ripa Reveals Her Surprisingly Simple Mother’s Day Dinner as Son Joaquin Orders McDonald’s for the Family

Kelly Ripa celebrated Mother’s Day in unexpectedly relaxed fashion this year, swapping an elaborate family dinner for a Big Mac, a large portion of fries and almost no washing-up.

The 55-year-old television presenter revealed that her family ordered McDonald’s for the occasion — something she said had not happened in their household for “years and years.”

Kelly shared the amusing story with her husband and co-host, Mark Consuelos, during Monday’s episode of Live with Kelly and Mark.

As the couple reflected on their weekend, Kelly said she had enjoyed a wonderful Mother’s Day with two of their three children at home.

The unusual dinner plan came from their youngest son, Joaquin, who is currently appearing on Broadway in Death of a Salesman.

While waiting backstage, the 23-year-old sent his mother a message suggesting that the family celebrate with fast food.

However, the busy performer initially confused the occasion.

Kelly recalled that Joaquin wrote that he thought it would be fun to order McDonald’s for her “birthday.”

She quickly reminded him that it was not her birthday, prompting Joaquin to correct himself and explain that he had meant Mother’s Day.

The minor mistake only made the spontaneous suggestion more endearing.

Rather than organising a formal meal or spending hours cooking, the family decided to follow his plan and order from the famous fast-food restaurant.

Kelly enthusiastically told viewers that she chose a Big Mac and large fries, appearing delighted by the rare indulgence.

Mark ordered a Quarter Pounder, although he later joked that he was uncertain whether the burger still lived up to its name.

Kelly agreed that her Big Mac also appeared smaller than she remembered.

Mark suggested that perhaps the food had not changed at all and that they were simply bigger than they had been when they last ordered it.

Despite their playful suspicions about the portions, both agreed that the meal was delicious.

For Kelly, one of the greatest luxuries was the effortless clean-up.

She demonstrated how the wrappers and containers could simply be gathered together and thrown away once dinner was finished.

There were no pans to scrub, serving dishes to wash or leftovers to carefully store.

Mark pointed out that Kelly had still placed proper plates on the table, despite the food arriving in disposable packaging.

She explained that she wanted to make the evening feel special because it was Mother’s Day.

Afterwards, the unused plates went straight back into the cupboard.

The simple celebration reflected the warm and humorous family dynamic that Kelly and Mark regularly share with viewers.

The couple, who married in 1996 after meeting on the set of All My Children, are parents to Michael, Lola and Joaquin.

Their children are now adults pursuing careers and lives of their own, making occasions when several of them are home increasingly precious.

Joaquin’s Broadway schedule meant that even his dinner suggestion had to arrive from backstage.

Yet the text message still allowed him to shape the evening and give his mother a celebration she would remember.

Kelly’s enthusiasm also came from how unusual the meal was for her family.

She is often associated with a disciplined lifestyle and has spoken over the years about maintaining consistent eating and exercise habits.

That made the sight of the daytime star happily describing a Big Mac and large fries especially amusing to viewers.

The presenter did, however, make clear that not every item on the McDonald’s menu would tempt her.

Later in the programme, a discussion about eggs prompted Kelly to reveal that she had gradually developed a strong dislike of them.

Mark reminded her that she did not enjoy eggs, while Kelly joked that he might need to disguise them inside other dishes.

She admitted that this would be difficult because she immediately notices pieces of egg, even when they are mixed into fried rice.

Kelly said the aversion had not begun during childhood.

Instead, it developed over time — possibly, she joked, because Mark had repeatedly asked her to prepare eggs for him.

Although she no longer likes eating them, Kelly insisted that she still knows how to cook an excellent plate of scrambled eggs.

The exchange offered another example of the affectionate teasing that has become central to the couple’s morning show.

Since Mark officially joined his wife as co-host in 2023, the pair have frequently turned stories from their marriage and family life into lively on-air conversations.

Their Mother’s Day discussion required no celebrity guests, expensive gifts or lavish restaurant reservations to entertain viewers.

It was simply a story about a son sending a slightly confused text, a family ordering burgers and a mother deciding to put plates on the table anyway.

For Kelly, the absence of ceremony appeared to be part of what made the evening so enjoyable.

After decades of juggling live television, parenting and demanding schedules, her ideal celebration did not need to be complicated.

It required two of her children at home, a message from Joaquin backstage and a meal nobody had to cook.

The Big Mac may have seemed smaller than Kelly remembered, but the family moment surrounding it was more than enough.

Sometimes the most memorable Mother’s Day gift is not jewellery, flowers or an elegant dinner.

It is a bag of fries, an empty kitchen sink and the people you love gathered around the table.
