Inside Jonathan Steinberg’s Remarkable Life: The Wall Street Visionary Who Has Stood Beside Maria Bartiromo for 27 Years

Maria Bartiromo has spent decades questioning presidents, interviewing billionaires and reporting from the centre of American finance.

Yet away from the television cameras, the Fox Business star shares her life with a powerful Wall Street figure who has largely avoided the celebrity spotlight surrounding his wife.

Jonathan Steinberg is the founder and chief executive of WisdomTree, a global financial company overseeing approximately $169 billion in assets as of June 2026.

He and Maria have been married since 1999, creating one of the most enduring partnerships connecting American business journalism with the investment industry.

Fresh attention turned towards their marriage following reports that Donald Trump had seriously considered Maria as a possible running mate during the 2024 presidential campaign.

The claim appeared in Revenge, a book by Politico reporter Alex Isenstadt about Trump’s return to power.

According to the account, Trump discussed Maria’s ability to communicate on television and connect with wealthy financial supporters.

She was reportedly considered during a flight to Butler, Pennsylvania, but advisers argued that there was insufficient time to complete the extensive vetting required for a vice-presidential candidate.

Maria has not publicly presented herself as having been a formal finalist, and Trump ultimately selected JD Vance.

Still, the extraordinary story placed renewed attention on both the broadcaster and the highly successful husband who has supported her throughout much of her career.

Jonathan was born into a family already well known on Wall Street.

His father, Saul Steinberg, became one of the most prominent and controversial financiers of the 1970s and 1980s.

Often described as a corporate raider, Saul pursued ambitious takeover attempts involving major American companies, including Walt Disney and Chemical Bank.

His bold dealmaking created enormous wealth and transformed the Steinberg name into shorthand for the aggressive financial culture of the period.

Jonathan might easily have remained hidden beneath that enormous reputation.

Instead, he established a separate path.

After attending the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School, he founded the business that would ultimately become WisdomTree in 1988.

The company did not immediately resemble the global asset manager it is today.

Its early history included financial publishing and investor information before Jonathan shifted its focus towards exchange-traded funds.

WisdomTree launched its first ETFs in 2006, entering a market already dominated by significantly larger institutions.

Jonathan believed there was room for investment products built around alternative weighting strategies rather than simply following the market value of each company.

That approach helped WisdomTree develop a distinctive identity in the rapidly expanding ETF industry.

The company crossed $50 billion in assets under management less than a decade after introducing its first funds.
