Barry Manilow has made an emotional admission about his health, revealing he fears his famous singing voice may never fully come back.
The legendary singer, 82, underwent surgery after being diagnosed with lung cancer last year. Doctors removed part of his left lung in a lobectomy after discovering the disease at an early stage.
Although the operation was successful and Barry did not need chemotherapy or radiation, his recovery has been far harder than expected.
Speaking on Good Morning America, the Copacabana star said his voice no longer sounds the same.
“My voice — I don’t know whether it’s coming back,” he admitted, explaining that a recent sound check left him devastated.
Barry said he had always taken his voice for granted, but now fears the gift that made him a global star may have changed forever.
The singer also revealed he suffered a terrifying setback after surgery when he developed pneumonia and ended up in intensive care. He said there were moments when he feared he might not survive.
Despite the emotional toll, Barry remains determined to return to the stage.
He is due to begin the UK dates of his farewell tour in Glasgow on June 9, but admitted he is nervous about whether his voice will be there when he needs it most.
After decades of making fans feel joy through his music, Barry said all he hopes now is to sing again — and hold back the tears when he finally steps back into the spotlight.
