“I’m failing physically, and it’s terrifying.”
Miriam Margolyes, the beloved actress from Harry Potter and Call the Midwife, has spoken candidly about her health issues and the tough road ahead as she grows older. The 85-year-old star, who has entertained audiences for decades, has shared her concerns about her physical decline and the future she faces.
Facing the Reality of Aging
Miriam, who underwent major heart surgery last year, admitted that she is struggling with the idea of aging and its inevitable challenges. In a recent interview, she revealed that she fears not having enough financial resources for the medical care she will need as her condition worsens.
“I’m worried that I won’t have enough money for carers when I finally get paralyzed or whatever it is that’s going to happen to me,” Miriam said, showing a rare vulnerability. “I’m saving up cash so I can pay people to look after me and my partner. We don’t have children, so I need to make sure I’m taken care of the way I’m used to.”
Miriam’s fears also stem from the emotional toll that aging has taken on her relationships. Her long-term partner, Heather Sutherland, has been by her side since 1968, and Miriam admitted that as they both grow older, their bond is changing.
Reflecting on the difficulties of aging and illness, Miriam shared: “Unfortunately, as you get older and illness strikes, the whole basis of your relationship changes. Dependency changes, expectation changes, capacity changes. The person you fell in love with, the one you couldn’t wait to be with, is no longer the same.”
Miriam’s father, Joseph, struggled with dementia in his later years, and she recounted the heartbreaking toll it took on their family. “It was utterly devastating. Every now and then, I would catch glimpses of the dad I once knew, but they were fleeting moments,” she said, her voice filled with emotion.
Preparing for What’s to Come
Despite the emotional and physical challenges, Miriam remains hopeful, often quoting the words of William Saroyan: “I know that everyone has to die, but I thought an exception might be made in my case.” With a knowing laugh, she added, “I know now that is definitely not true. What do I think happens after death? My therapist used to say there may be a party. I honestly don’t think there’s anything, I think you just stop, but it would be nice if there’s a party.”
Miriam’s openness about her fears, her health, and the realities of growing older has touched the hearts of many. Despite the difficulties, she remains hopeful and committed to preparing for the future—both emotionally and financially.
A Legacy of Love and Laughter
Miriam and Heather have shared 54 years of love and partnership, and Miriam remains optimistic that they will continue to be there for each other until the very end. “Life is sweeter shared,” she said, reflecting on the beauty of having someone to love and trust.
For Miriam, the future may be uncertain, but one thing is clear: her spirit, humor, and love for life will continue to inspire and uplift us all.
