In a moment that left viewers reaching for tissues across the UK, Michael Ball, the beloved singer and theatre star, opened his heart on This Morning about the devastating loss of his mother, Ruth, last year. The normally composed performer revealed raw, intimate details of her final days, sharing a story that was as heart-wrenching as it was poignant.
Michael, who appeared on the ITV daytime favourite to promote his 23rd studio album Glow, spoke candidly to hosts Dermot O’Leary and Alison Hammond. His voice cracked as he recalled the final moments with his mother, who passed away peacefully at the age of 91.

“It was the most beautiful thing, if one can even plan a death,” Michael said, his eyes glistening. “She became ill on a Saturday, and for five days she faced a very serious episode – a heart episode. The doctors said, ‘If we intervene again, it’s going to be really horrible.’”

In a testament to her character, Ruth made a remarkable decision: she chose end-of-life care, refusing further invasive treatment. Michael described her as “utterly determined, fully compos mentis, and funny as hell.” He continued, voice thick with emotion: “We cried a lot, we talked, and I was holding her hand as she went. It’s deeply sad, but it was perfect. Beautiful, in a way that words can hardly capture.”
Even in her final year, Ruth lived life on her own terms. Michael recalled a memory from her 90th birthday that perfectly captured her spirit. Expecting she might want a traditional celebration – perhaps lunch at the Ritz – he was stunned when she declared she wanted to “go on the fastest zip wire in North Wales” and get a tattoo.

“She got a Welsh dragon inked on her arm,” Michael laughed through tears. “Then she went on the fastest zip wire. It was a perfect ending. Absolutely perfect.”
For Michael, the mourning began even before she passed. He explained that watching her face the end with grace, humour, and courage was a more profound loss than the days that followed. “It wasn’t a tragedy, it was deeply sad. I mourned more in those moments than afterwards,” he admitted.
The story resonated with audiences not just for its sorrow, but for the celebration of a life lived fully, boldly, and without compromise. Michael Ball’s emotional revelation is a powerful reminder of love, family, and the human capacity to find beauty even in life’s most difficult farewells.
