The extraordinary story began in 2024, when Tiana, a mother-of-one, began researching racial disparities in the US justice system. She reached out to James, imprisoned since 2008 for the shooting deaths of two music producers, and the pair soon formed a deep connection through daily emails and calls lasting six to seven hours.Tiana, 31, had only ever seen her husband-to-be through a glass screen since they met in 2024, before they wed on April 14 and he was put to death on April 30

Tiana travelled to Houston, Texas, to meet James face-to-face, spending 90 days with him before marrying him on April 14. The ceremony was held behind glass, with no physical contact allowed, and was bittersweet, knowing his execution was imminent on April 30.

Speaking to Cat Deeley, Tiana recounted the intense emotional moments of their wedding and the days that followed. “We were trying to enjoy the moment, but it was impossible to ignore what was looming,” she said, describing how James had typed and read his vows, full of tears and deep emotion.Tiana explained that the pair were wed with glass in between them, and they were 'not allowed to physically touch' before he faced the death penalty two weeks later (pictured: Tiana and James on their wedding day)Tiana (pictured) left Cat, 49, fighting back tears as she explained how she was allowed to hug and kiss him for the first time after he was pronounced dead

Despite filing appeals and gathering over 80,000 signatures to halt his execution, the Supreme Court denied relief. Tiana described the harrowing experience of witnessing her husband strapped to the gurney. She recalled, “You get called into the prison… once the door closes, you cannot come out until they declare him dead. My brain couldn’t comprehend what I was seeing.”Cat's voice broke and she appeared teary as she asked: 'When it was over, did you get to hold him or be with him?'

Tiana was able to hug and kiss James for the first time only after he was pronounced dead. “He was adamant that if we were going to kiss for the first time, it would be as husband and wife,” she explained. The ordeal left her mentally and physically drained, causing panic attacks, flashbacks, and loss of sleep, but she remains committed to clearing James’ name.Revealing she was able to kiss her husband after his passing, she continued: 'He was very adamant that if we were going to kiss for the first time, it would be as his wife' (pictured: James Broadnax)

The case has long been controversial. James’ cousin, Demarius Cummings, later confessed to the murders, matching DNA evidence and casting doubt on James’ conviction. Tiana stressed that James had no prior violent criminal record and had falsely confessed under duress. She continues to fight for a review of his case, determined to prove his innocence.

Cat Deeley struggled to hold back tears as Tiana spoke, urging her to also care for herself amid the trauma. The tragic love story highlights the complexities of justice, wrongful convictions, and a marriage forged under unimaginable circumstances.
