The Kansas City Chiefs are making significant adjustments to their roster after the 2026 NFL Draft, with head coach Andy Reid leading the charge in reshaping the team for the upcoming season. As part of their early offseason moves, the Chiefs made two notable roster changes: releasing running back ShunDerrick Powell and granting offensive lineman Chukwuebuka Godrick an international player exemption.
ShunDerrick Powell’s Release:
Powell, who had been with the Chiefs since earlier this year, was released to clear space on the 90-man roster. Despite his potential, Powell faced stiff competition in the backfield, especially after the Chiefs’ fifth-round pick in the 2026 draft, Nebraska’s Emmett Johnson. Additionally, the team is linked to free agent Jaydn Ott, signaling an intent to improve the rushing attack. This move highlights the competitive nature of Kansas City’s roster, with Reid and the front office making tough decisions to refine the team’s depth chart.
Chukwuebuka Godrick’s International Player Exemption:
In contrast, Godrick received an international player exemption, allowing the Chiefs to carry 91 players into training camp, rather than the standard 90-man limit. Godrick, a 25-year-old offensive tackle, has been with Kansas City since 2023, spending much of his time on the practice squad. He was elevated to the active roster late last season and even started three games due to injuries along the offensive line. The exemption provides Godrick with additional flexibility to develop within the system without affecting the team’s roster numbers.
What’s Next:
These changes come as the Chiefs are looking to bounce back after missing the playoffs for the first time in over a decade. With Patrick Mahomes still leading the offense, Kansas City is determined to re-establish itself as a contender, and these early moves show a commitment to improvement. As OTAs and training camp progress, the Chiefs will continue to evaluate their roster and look for further opportunities to strengthen the team.
