Sir Simon Russell Beale Reveals Cancer Diagnosis and Withdrawal from Titus Andronicus

Sir Simon Russell Beale, the acclaimed actor known for his role as Ser Simon Strong in House of the Dragon, has revealed that he has been battling colon cancer for the past eight months. The 63-year-old actor, beloved for his performances in My Week with Marilyn and The Death of Stalin, shared his health news with fans after a period of private struggle.

The actor’s diagnosis explains his sudden withdrawal from the West End production of Titus Andronicus in September 2025, when he cited “health reasons” for stepping down. It was later revealed that Beale had been urgently hospitalized following his filming commitments for the Game of Thrones prequel series. Shortly after, he received the diagnosis that would turn his world upside down.

Speaking at a recent event at The Delaunay restaurant in London, Simon opened up about his journey, saying: “I decided it was time to tell everyone… I was involved in Titus Andronicus in Stratford, followed by House of the Dragon, and then had to go to hospital where I was diagnosed with colon cancer.” With characteristic humility, Beale added, “The last eight months have been quite tough… it’s clearly been quite boring, but stopping everything was hard. I’ve never done that before.”

Despite his battle with cancer, Sir Simon remained optimistic, revealing his determination to return to work. He mentioned that he had agreed to lend his voice to a new stage adaptation of Venus and Adonis, which will tour the UK this summer. “I’m at a stage now where I’m wondering if I should take the risk. I’ve decided to go for it and will start next week,” he said.
