Prince Harry Follows in Princess Diana’s Footsteps in Mine Clearance Mission in Ukraine
Prince Harry has continued his mother Princess Diana’s legacy by supporting Halo Trust teams in their efforts to clear landmines and unexploded ordnance in Ukraine. The Duke of Sussex, 41, recently joined the humanitarian organization in Bucha, near Kyiv, where he operated drones and a robot dog named Spot to safely retrieve hazardous materials.
In a powerful moment of connection, Harry praised the “extraordinary work” being done by the teams and reflected on the longstanding issue of landmines, which his mother had raised awareness about nearly three decades ago. “It’s incredibly heartbreaking that, nearly 30 years after my mother highlighted this issue in Angola, we are still here, facing the same problem,” Harry said.
The Duke, a former Apache helicopter pilot, was particularly enthusiastic about operating one of the drones, even requesting a second flight after his initial turn. He called the experience “incredibly fun,” but the underlying cause remained deeply serious. “The work here is crucial, but the cleanup will take decades—two, three, even four decades,” he added.
Harry’s trip to Ukraine marks his first visit to a minefield operated by Halo Trust since following in his mother’s footsteps in Angola last year. Princess Diana’s iconic visit to a minefield in 1997 helped propel global efforts to ban landmines, and her work continues to inspire Harry’s own commitment to addressing this ongoing humanitarian crisis.
