Stacey Solomon has opened up about the powerful impact of a recent Sort Your Life Out episode, where she helped a family struggling with dementia prepare for the challenging years ahead.
The episode featured Gerry, who was diagnosed with Early-Onset Alzheimer’s at just 55. His condition had already led to the loss of his independence, including giving up driving and retirement, leaving him and his wife, Trish, overwhelmed with the task of caring for him while managing their household. As their home became increasingly cluttered, it added to their struggles.
Stacey and the team, working closely with dementia specialists, helped Gerry and Trish by decluttering their space in a way that made it safer and easier for Gerry to navigate. The transformation went beyond just tidying up—it was about setting the home up for the future, anticipating the challenges ahead as Gerry’s condition progresses.
“Even we didn’t realize how much it would change Gerry’s life until we watched him walk through the house,” Stacey shared. “You could see the fear and panic that often comes with Alzheimer’s vanish as soon as he saw the space. His shoulders relaxed, and his whole family felt at ease.”
The emotional transformation highlighted the deeper meaning of the show. Stacey emphasized that it wasn’t just about decluttering but about creating a supportive environment for the family to face difficult times together. “It was a setup for the years to come, which are going to get increasingly difficult,” she said, hopeful that the changes would be one less thing for them to worry about.
On Morning Live, Stacey discussed the powerful stories behind the series, mentioning that many families face far more than just disorganization. “People might jump to conclusions and think they’re lazy or don’t want to tidy. But there are often huge things happening in people’s lives that stop them in their tracks,” she said. “We’re part of their journey in letting go of things they thought they needed and making space for fresh starts.”
As the show continues, Stacey’s work with families dealing with personal tragedies and challenges highlights the importance of offering emotional and physical support during tough times. Sort Your Life Out continues to air on Tuesdays at 8 pm on BBC One.
