Lesley Manville has been crowned a new queen of Broadway after winning her first ever Tony Award at the age of 70.
The British acting legend took home Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Play for her powerful performance as Jocasta in Oedipus.
The victory was especially remarkable as it marked Lesley’s Broadway debut, following huge acclaim for the same role in London, where she had already won an Olivier Award.
Accepting the honour at Radio City Music Hall, Lesley admitted she was “overwhelmed” and praised director Robert Icke for bringing the 2,500-year-old tragedy into the modern world with striking force.
Her win came after an exhausting weekend. Just hours before flying to New York, Lesley had been performing on stage in London in Les Liaisons Dangereuses.
Despite the jet lag, she dazzled on the Tony Awards red carpet in a shimmering orange gown, proving once again why she remains one of Britain’s most respected stars.
At 70, Lesley Manville’s Broadway triumph is more than an award — it is a powerful reminder that true talent only grows stronger with time. ✨
